Tying It All Together: The Ring Seam

How we're giving a beautiful older home back its beauty and strength.

Not every project gets to show off its muscle. This one holds the house together.

PanGro is working to rebuild a historic home in Co Tipperary, Ireland known as The Newgrove House. We started with reinforcing the structure with a ‘ring beam' (sometimes it's also called a 'ring seam').

Using a ring seam is smart — it enhances structural integrity, makes it seismic resistant, and improves durability. It's particularly useful in historic homes with masonry walls.

So how do we do it?

"This is one of the top projects we end up doing," says PanGro founder James Grogan. "In this case we’re working on this Irish house overall from around the turn of the century, probably 1820." 

PanGro's history and experience working on historic buildings is invaluable. "We’ll install rebar and pour a continuous concrete beam at the top of the walls," James continues. "It ties everything together in one seamless loop, reinforcing the structure overall."

This makes the building super sturdy — giving this beautiful historic home new strength. Once it’s in place, the ring beam distributes weight, prevents cracks, and ensures the roof won’t cause the old walls to bow or spread.
